Ex-Army Colonel Takes Centre Stage in Trump’s Security Squad

Trump recently announced the appointment of USA’s new national security officer, Mike Waltz, an ex-US Army colonel who currently serves as the co-chair of the Indian caucus. Waltz, 50, is a congressman from Florida and has also served as a Green Beret, an elite arm of the US Army Special Forces.

More importantly, Waltz has been a forceful critic of the Biden administration in more than one matter. Ever since he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2019, he has had several disagreements with the Biden administration. His main arguments were that Europe should support Ukraine far more than the US does and that the US should be more stringent with its support. He has also criticized the Biden administration’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Both of these critiques align with the policies of the president-elect.

Waltz supported Trump’s decision to push NATO to spend more in support of Ukraine but did not suggest that the US forces pull out of the alliance altogether, as suggested by the president-elect. Waltz said, “Look, we can be allies and friends and have tough conversations.”

Moreover, Waltz has also been part of the Republican China task force and has, time and time again argued that the US military is not prepared to lead a conflict in the Indo-Pacific region if it needs to counteract the effects of China.
