DOGE Proposes Defunding the Federal Zombie Programs

Recently, after being named the 47th president of the United States of America, Trump announced that his administration will have a Department of Government Efficiency, which will ensure that the federal government and agencies are efficient. The department is led by the richest man in the world, Elon Musk and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.

Now, the department is eyeing recommendations for a list of federal programs, including veterans’ healthcare, children’s grants, and NASA. Although the fine details of the proposal are still unknown, the department wrote an opinion piece on Wednesday that the department will target cuts to federal spending that are“unauthorized by Congress or being used in ways that Congress never intended.”

DOGE posted a link to a report by the Congressional Budget Office on X, confirming what programs will be at the center of the cuts in spending. The CBO report included 491 programs, totaling about $516 billion. The programs included are as follows-

Along with the report, Vivek Ramaswamy also posted it on X and said, “If the spending isn’t authorised, then we shouldn’t be spending it. That shouldn’t be controversial.” However, the department can only recommend proposals and not act on them. For this proposal to be accepted, it first needs to be passed by Congress, which is a tough sell.
