The founder of the fashion brand Mango, Isak Andic, who led the brand’s move from a storefront in Spain to a conglomerate with more than 2,000 stores across five continents, passed away at the age of 71 following a fall during one of his hiking trips near Barcelona on Saturday. The death was announced by a long-time Mango employee and the Chief Executive of the company, Toni Ruiz. Gloria Torrent Caldas, a spokeswoman for the company, later confirmed the cause of death.
Isak Andic was born in Istanbul in 1953. As a teenager, his family moved to Spain, where he worked in the wholesale and retail sector before founding Mango. Mr Andic, the non-executive chairman at Mango, had a net worth of around $4.5 billion at the time of his death. He started Mango in the mid-1980s as a T-shirt-selling company in Barcelona. Over the next four decades, Mango emerged as one of Spain’s leading international retailers and made a name for itself by offering a creative, electric and ever-changing selection of affordable women’s clothing.

Mr. Ruiz, the CEO of the company, said in a statement, “His legacy reflects the achievements of a business project marked by success and also by his human quality. He leaves a huge void, but we are all, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements. In these extremely difficult times, we share the family’s pain as if it were our own.”
