America’s second-biggest car manufacturer, Ford Motors, has been fined $165 million. The fine comes after the company failed to promptly call cars with defective rearview cameras. The agency responsible for fining Ford, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said that Ford had also failed to provide adequate information about the failure and the callback, prompting that it was a major failure from the company’s side. If Ford pays the full fine, it will be the second biggest fine ever issued by the agency. The biggest fine by the agency came back in 2015 when they slapped a $200 million fine on Japanese company Takata, which made defective airbag inflaters.
The agency’s deputy administrator, Sophie Shulman, said, “Timely and accurate recalls are critical to keeping everyone safe on our roads. When manufacturers fail to prioritize the safety of the American public and meet their obligations under federal law, NHTSA will hold them accountable.”

Ford has also agreed to invest around $45 million to improve its ability to analyze data and propagate it properly to the concerned agencies. They will also set up new bases to test the components of their cars.
The company also came out and made a statement saying, “We appreciate the opportunity to resolve this matter with NHTSA and remain committed to continuously improving safety and compliance at Ford. Wide-ranging enhancements are already underway with more to come, including advanced data analytics, a new in-house testing facility, among other capabilities.”
