A political action committee or PAC backed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is under investigation for possibly violating Michigan state laws, a spokesperson for the Michigan Secretary of State office said in a statement on Sunday. Musk had previously said that he does have a PAC, which is solely focused on supporting candidates, but has not pledged anything to anyone. CNBC reported that Musk-backed America PAC has been acquiring the personal information of various voters in Michigan and other states by having people submit their details through the PAC’s website, which says, “Register to vote.”
A spokesperson for Michigan’s Secretary of State said, “While the America PAC is a federal political action committee, the Department is reviewing their activities to determine if there have been any violations of state law. We will refer potential violations to the Michigan Attorney General’s office as appropriate.” A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of State also spoke on the matter and said, “Every citizen should know exactly how their personal information is being used by PACs, especially if an entity is claiming it will help people register to vote in Michigan or any other state.”
