Amid the internal squabble in OpenAI, many top leadership members left the firm, and a new name has been added to that list. The CTO of OpenAI, Mira Murati, who has been monumental in its development, announced on Wednesday that she will be leaving the company soon.
In a note to her OpenAI team, which she posted on X, she said, “My six-and-a-half years with the OpenAI team have been an extraordinary privilege. There’s never an ideal time to step away from a place one cherishes, yet this moment feels right.”
Maruti joins a long list of employees who have left the company in recent years. According to some, the leadership shakeup is a result of OpenAI’s recent change in business model. The company is trying to forge a new and controversial path to growth, including making it easier for it to treatise funding from investors and generate revenue. This is so “controversial” because the company was formed as a non-profit organization with the sole purpose of advancing AI technology. However, it seems that this is no longer the case.

Murati’s departure follows the exit of OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-founder, Ilya Sutskever, who left in May to establish a new company focused on AI safety. In August, another co-founder, John Schulman, joined the competitor, Anthropic. Additionally, OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman is currently on an extended break.
Since last November, Mira was the interim CEO of the company for a short stint as the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman was ousted from the company. After that, 500 company employees, including Mira Murati, signed a petition stating that they would leave the company if Sam Altman was not reinstated as the CEO again. Now, it’s her time that is nearing the end.
