Tensions are boiling up between China and the USA over multiple disputes. However, the USA has dealt the latest blow in the form of a technology ban. The US plans to ban Chinese and Russian tech from being used in making cars in America due to concerns over national security. Officials are worried that the technology used in the cars helps them communicate with each other by helping them connect to a network, which poses a risk of the cars on American roads being controlled by foreign entities.
The Commerce Secretary of the United States, Gina Raimondo, said this plan is “targeted and proactive” to protect the US and her interests. She also said, “Cars today have cameras, microphones, GPS tracking, and other technologies connected to the internet. It doesn’t take much imagination to understand how a foreign adversary with access to this information could pose a serious risk to both our national security and the privacy of US citizens.”

Chinese officials also shared their views on the matter and said that the US was broadening the “concept of national security” and unfairly targeting Chinese firms. The spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, said, “China opposes the US’s broadening of the concept of national security and the discriminatory actions taken against Chinese companies and products. We urge the US side to respect market principles and provide an open, fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises.”
Although only a small percentage of US car tech came from China or Russia, it still poses a significant supply chain crisis that could disrupt the entire automobile market in the United States of America.
